One of the biggest nights in fashion took place yesterday. The\u00a02017 Met Gala paid homage to Rei Kawakubo and\u00a0her avant-garde, visionary designs for Comme des Gar\u00e7ons. –\u00a0You know nothing about Met Gala or Ms.\u00a0Kawakubo? Shh!<\/p>\n

Met Gala is for fashion world like the\u00a0Super Bowl or Oscars – everyone goes there. The\u00a0story started in 1948, with the publicist Eleanor Lambert, as a\u00a0typical philanthropic endeavor for \u201cthe great and good\u201d of New York society. Now, it\u2019s an\u00a0annual fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute – reserved for global famous names from fashion, film, politics and\u00a0business.<\/p>\n

Gala marks the\u00a0opening of annual Institute’s fashion exhibition. Each year’s event celebrates a\u00a0theme and the\u00a0exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the\u00a0night. Met Gala always takes place on first Monday of May. There is a\u00a0special guest list and\u00a0special tickets that cost 30,000 per person.<\/p>\n

The inspiration for this year\u2019s gala was Rei Kawakubo, founder and\u00a0designer of Comme des Gar\u00e7ons.\u00a0Ms. Kawakubo is a\u00a074-year-old Japanese designer who founded her label in 1969. She is only the\u00a0second living designer to be given a\u00a0solo show at\u00a0the Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983.\u00a0Other designers featured in recent years include for example Charles James (2014), Alexander McQueen (2011) or\u00a0Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada in a\u00a0joint show (2012).\u00a0<\/p>\n
