Little spot at\u00a0the\u00a0Pacific Ocean. 6\u00a0km\u00b2 islands, turquoise lagoons and\u00a0reefs, beautiful beaches with constant sunshine – that’s all about Bikini, an\u00a0atoll belonging to the\u00a0Marshall Islands. How\u00a0it gave a\u00a0name for a\u00a0popular swimwear and\u00a0what story stands behind – read in\u00a0our post.<\/p>\n

Located at the\u00a0North Pacific Ocean, close to Micronesia, atoll Bikini is\u00a0known for two resons. Firstly and\u00a0obviously, for being a\u00a0name of swimsuit, that appeared in\u00a01946 in\u00a0France. Secondly, it\u00a0was a\u00a0place of USA nuclear weapons tests, that drown world’s attention in\u00a050-60s. Nowadays, the island chain is\u00a0safe for tourists and\u00a0offers an\u00a0amazing views for divers. This\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0place that still has\u00a0Robinson Crusoe’s style. In\u00a02010 Bikini was\u00a0named World Heritage Site by\u00a0UNESCO. So,\u00a0what is\u00a0the relation between bikini and\u00a0Bikini, any\u00a0ides for now?<\/p>\n

Women’s beachwear<\/span> appeared much<\/span> earlier than<\/span> in the\u00a020th<\/span> century, however,<\/span> till late<\/span> 20s<\/span> it looked nothing like the bikinis we\u00a0are use to. Long<\/span> tunics and<\/span> overalls<\/span>, often with sleeves were tightly covering bodies<\/span>.<\/span> Only\u00a0when <\/span>sunbathing<\/span> was considered<\/span> to be good for health,<\/span> along<\/span> with the\u00a0fashion<\/span> to spend<\/span> free time<\/span> on the coast, costumes started to dwindle. Finally, they became more comfortable, <\/span>giving <\/span>freedom of\u00a0movement and also showing more <\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

What’s known to us today –\u00a0 a\u00a0two-piece<\/span> swimsuits – a<\/span>ppeared in\u00a0May\u00a01946. That\u00a0time two guys in France came up with the\u00a0same idea of super skimpy swimsuits. Louis<\/span> R\u00e9ard<\/span>, who\u00a0was a\u00a0car designer<\/span> and\u00a0Jacques<\/span> Heim<\/span> working in fashion industry, <\/span><\/span> <\/span> are\u00a0the fathers of<\/span> mini <\/span>bikinis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Heim’s project called “Smaller than an\u00a0atom” was promoted as the smallest swimming suit in the world. R\u00e9ard went even a\u00a0step further, reaching the point where there was no model willing to present his bold costume in\u00a0public! (Remember it’s still 1950s). Finally, he\u00a0hired a\u00a0stripper and\u00a0the show raised a\u00a0big controversy, but\u00a0it inspired him to give a\u00a0name for the first swimsuits. As\u00a0the swimwear got no less attention than\u00a0nuclear weapons tests, carried out at the\u00a0Pacific Ocean at\u00a0this time, he\u00a0said it\u00a0was<\/span> like a\u00a0bomb<\/span> at<\/span> Bikini atoll. <\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bikini was\u00a0getting more popular, starting with the French and\u00a0spreading throughout Europe. Thanks to <\/span><\/span> Brigitte Bardot it\u00a0came to fashion in\u00a0America. Yes, thanks to that famous scene from Roger Vadima’s movie “And\u00a0God Created Woman”. If\u00a0you haven’t seen it, now it’s time to watch. And\u00a0choose your new bikini.
