DIY glasses case

image

Summer is over, unfortunately. Time to pack away the light dresses, shorts, bikinis and straw hats… (Not so bad, if we replace them with cosy, oversize sweaters?) You might also need a case for our favourite sunnies, to keep them safe for next year. Today we are making a do-it-yourself sunglasses case. It’s simple and you can choose the pattern that reminds you of summer vacations. Pastels? Etno? Flowery? The case can be used for reading glasses as well. See the instructions below.

What you will need:

– 2 pieces of fabric measuring 22cm x 12cm
– 2 pieces of fabric measuring 20cm x 12cm
– pins
– needle and thread
– press stud
– scissors
– pen
– ruler
– sewing machine

The first and the most difficult part is to choose the fabrics you will use. Colours, patterns and type of textiles. Tip: inelastic materials will hold the shape better.

image

Cut two pieces of each material. The outer fabric is bigger (22cm) than the lining (20cm).

image

Take two pieces of lining fabric and pin the right sides together along one of the short sides. Sew the piece together along this edge. Repeat this for the outer pieces as well.

Sew the outer and lining pieces together, along the short side, as shown in the picture.

Pin the sides, to make it easier to sew.

Now you have to sew all the way around these pieces on the machine. Important! It’s essential to leave a little gap at the end of lining pieces, so that you will be able to turn the case right way out later.

Take the scissors and cut off the four corners.

Watch out for the stitching. You can fold and iron the edges, it’s useful later, when you reverse the case.

Remember the little gap we left? Now, using the scissors to pull, turn the case the right way round. Your outer fabric should be on top now.

image

Once you have done that, hand sew the gap. You can also secure the begining and end of the case with a few ‘on-the-spot’ stitches.

image

Nearly done.

image

Push the lining fabric to the inside of the case.

image

Last step. Sew on the press stud inside the case. Use a double thread and do a few stitches to be sure its’s attached well.

Ok. It wasn’t the last step. Now it’s time to put your sunglasses or glasses inside! Wasn’t that difficult, was it? Be inspired by Reserved and make your own one.
