Riddle for today! When was the first fashion week in London? (And how is it possible that it was so long time ago?) In today’s post you’ll find some interesting facts about fashion weeks and a large dose of street fashion, straight from London.
October 1983, it’s when the first London Fashion Week took place. 34 years ago. The main concept of presenting collections to public is even older and goes back to XIX century.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, business-savvy designers employed women to wear their designs around popular promenades and racetracks. It allowed them to be noticed, photographed and reported by the media – quite similar to what bloggers and celebrities do today.
By the end of XX century, many high fashion designers employed in-house models to display their latest collections to elite clientele. Those “fashion parades” (in french défilé) lasted for hours and were repeated for few day in a row – exactly like fashion weeks nowadays. Till now in France the runway shows are called “défilés de mode”.
London, being one of the most prominent fashion weeks, shows also inspiring street style full of colours, patterns and experimental ideas. Looking for some avant-garde? Here you will find it.
