We already know who’s going to photograph the 2015 edition of iconic Pirelli calendar. After celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, with images by Helmut Newton, the opportunity came to Steven Meisel – American photographer that has shot every single Italian Vogue cover since 1988! Controversial and unpredictable, may create one of the most exciting Pirelli calendars to date. But before everyone focuses on Meisel, let’s see the historical beauty of Newton’s black and white arts.
The anniversary edition was a big surprise. 2014 calendar presents stunning images taken almost 30 years ago, in 1985 by Helmut Newton. He was asked to prepare the Pirelli 1986 issue, although the pictures were never released. Newton didn’t finish the project due to some personal reasons and gave it to his assistants. Finally, Robert Freeman landed the job and Newton’s work stayed unpublished in Pirelli archives till now.
Newton shot mostly in Monaco, during the Formula One Grand Prix and in Italian Tuscany. That time Pirelli still wanted to include their products on the pictures, which is not a task any more these days. The models you see are Susie Bick, Betty Prado and Antonia Dell’Atte.

The 50th Pirelli calendar presents 12 black and white photographs for every month and additional 28 backstage images, all shot in Monte Carlo and Chianti. It’s a remarkable way to celebrate the success and commemorate Newton, who passed away ten years ago. Next edition by Steven Meisel will appear in Autumn.
